Tanbo (meaning "rice paddy") is a self-proclaimed "rice-specialty restaurant." The restaurant reminds one of a good old Japanese house. Rice that meets the high standards of owner Shingo Okano is steamed with specially selected water and is brought to your table in an "ohitsu" (a special wooden bucket for rice). The miso soup, pickles, and fish are all made with fresh ingredients, and their sole purpose is to enhance the flavors of the rice. The "ohitsu-zen" set menu comes with a small pot of rice-tea. This tea is for enjoying your rice as "ochazuke" ("steeped in tea") at the end of your meal. Please leave a bit of rice left over at the end so you can try this traditional dish.1.) Leave a bit of rice left over at the end of your meal. 2.) Top your rice with the wasabi, ume, and tenkasu. 3.) Pour the rice-tea over the rice. 4.) Pick up the rice bowl and slurp up both rice and tea. Enjoy!

  • The atmosphere reminds me of Japanese rural. They select the best rice carefuly and they're proud of their rice. Rice served in a small woody bowl was excellent. Also, Genmai tea and some Japanese spices like wasabi, ume, and tenkasu are served; when a little rice is left, you can change the taste with adding these spices and Genmai tea as Ocyazuke. Most visiters wil be excited by the decoratio... Read More

It's a just a little bit hard to find, and it's easy to overlook because it's subterranean. But it's definitely worth your time to find it. The interior is not quite traditional but not quite modern. It's a very pleasant fusion. The shop's specialty i... Read More
