Ookamadomeshi torafuku specializes in Good Rice. High quality rice, Koshihikari made in Nagaoka of Niigata prefecture, is prepared in a gigantic fireplace and turns out shiny and delicious. The natural wooden interior of the restaurant also has the warmth of a fireplace. In the center of the dining area is their famed gigantic fireplace: one meter high and 60cm wide, it weighs in at 150kg. The ringing of bells announces the completion of another batch of rice in the fireplace. At lunch, enjoy a meal of rice fresh from the fireplace, side dishes and pickles. For dinner, have fish and sake, and finish your evening with a bowl of rice and pickles. We recommend the "mentaiko" (spicy fish roe). Top the rice with the roe, and eat up! It's the place to go when you want to really savor the joys of this Japanese staple.

My main issue with Japanese rice is that too many cooks overboil it, turning it into rice mush. The rice at Torafuku still sticks together, but the grains were cooked al dente and you can taste them individually (230 yen per serving). The ... Read More

  • If you're a real connoisseur of Japanese food, Oukamadomeshi Torafuku is the place for you. The rice used in the restaurant is the finest grade, and it's cooked in the most traditional way. The atmosphere is also fairly traditional. Like many modern restaurants its decor takes hints from traditional Japanese design. The horizontal lit panels on the wall hint at shoji. When you come here, it's bes... Read More
